Stags sweep Lions to win NCAA crown
The San Sebastian Stags weathered a furious rally by a determined San Beda squad to sweep the Red Lions in two games and win this year's NCAA Men's Senior Basketball title.
Coming out more focused and aggressive after being down by double-digits at halftime, the Stags mounted a strong second half comeback en route to a 76-61 victory over the three-time defending champions.
The title was truly a sweet ending to cap the first year of San Sebastian's rookie coach Renato "Ato" Agustin, who was also adjudged as the NCAA Coach of the Year after leading the Stags to the crown against the highly-favored San Beda Red Lions, who have previously won three straight crowns behind alumni Nigerian Sam Ekwe, and now-pros Yousif Aljamal, Pong Escobal, and Ogie Menor.
The game also saw three players exit from the hard court during the closing minutes. San Sebastian's Jimbo Aquino left the game holding on to his left knee during the 3:07 mark of the final period, while his fellow Stag Gilbert Bulawan ended his duty on the floor with 1:44 ticks to go with a bruised calf muscle. San Beda's Borgie Hermida headed to the bench bloodied after suffering a nasty cut over his left eye as a recipient of a wayward elbow from Pamboy Raymundo.
"The players responded very well," Agustin said during the post game interview. "May commitment ako sa kanila, at may commitment rin sila sa'kin," he added, even promising to duplicate his team's feat next year as they host NCAA's 86th Season.
Aquino, the lone player who will not see action for the Stags anymore next year as he has already played out his eligibility, was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Finals.
Meanwhile, Jose Rizal University's John Wilson was awarded this season's MVP plum for the Seniors division before tip-off. His fellow Rizal standout Louie Vigil was named the MVP of the Juniors division.
The high-flying American Sudan Daniel of San Beda College, on the other hand, was named the Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the year. He was also a part of the Mythical Five, together with Arellano University's Giorgio Ciriacruz, San Sebastian rookie Calvin Abueva, Letran College's RJ Jazul, and JRU's Wilson.
