Solemnity of All Saints
Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints. This celebration invites us to reflect on the lives of the people who have lived holy and humble lives. It is a fitting reminder for us Christians that like these holy men and women, we, too, must live our lives to the fullest. This is the dream of Jesus. This is likewise the vision of the Church.
The late Pope John Paul II, in his Angelus Message in 2003, said, “The Saints and the Blessed of Paradise remind us, as pilgrims on Earth, that prayer, above all, is our sustenance for each day so that we never lose sight of our eternal destiny.’’ Through prayer, we connect with God who is the source and font of all holiness. He is the fountain of all goodness and wisdom.
The Gospel reading today speaks of the vision of the Kingdom of God as preached by Jesus. Although one may find it very difficult to fulfill the challenges posed by Jesus in His preaching, all Christians are enjoined to uphold the values of the Gospel and not stick to our old wicked ways brought about by too much attachment to “things of this world.’’
We are told, in today’s liturgy, that heaven is our true destiny – that Jesus has prepared a place for us in the house of the Father. If we only become faithful to His teachings and fulfill the mission entrusted to us by the heavenly Father, we can be sure that we will inherit the Kingdom as promised by Jesus.
Holiness is not a difficult task. The great Blessed Mother Teresa once said. “We are not expected to perform great deeds, only small things but with great love.’’ Little acts of holiness are enough seeds of the Kingdom of God. No matter how small our virtuous acts may seem to be, that can already create a positive impact in our society.
Today, the Church invites us to follow the way of the Saints and the Blessed. They have walked the path to holiness, justice, and peace. This is the way of Christianity.
