God prepared ‘Ondoy’ hero

November 3, 2009, 4:14pm

A wife ordered a tombstone for her late husband’s grave with this inscription to be written: “Rest in Peace.”

A few days later she discovered that her husband had left a part of his will to another woman.

Furious, she called up the engraver to change the inscription on the tombstone.

The man replied that “Rest in Peace” had already been inscribed.

“Well then,” the wife snorted, “just add, ‘Wait. Until We Meet Again.’”

Post-Undas message: Be at peace with God, with everyone, especially your spouse.

Last Sunday, November 1st, we interviewed Judge Ralph Lee, the jet ski hero of typhoon Ondoy, in our program Salitang Buhay on DZMM tele-radyo.

Judge Lee recounted that when he got home on that fateful day of September 26, he immediately work on his computer to rush an overdue power point presentation.

Hardly had he started, when a call for help came from people stranded on rooftops desperately clinging for dear life. At first, he was not concerned since their house was also affected by the flood.

But when a second call rang, he could no longer ignore it. “Thank God,” he said, “my wife and children did not stop me. Had anyone objected, I would not have gone out.”

He put on his life vest and together with his driver, he brought out a sturdy rope, a rubber boat, and jet ski. Like Superman, he sped out from know, is very much tarnished by corrupt practices of certain scoundrels in robes.

Finally, the Ondoy hero said, “Let’s not help people only in times of calamities.

There are many ways we can extend a helping hand every day.”

By the way, after what happened, Judge Lee offered to form a rescue team that would help concerned government agencies when typhoons hit our country again.

Meantime, he gave this practical advice to have an emergency kit always ready.

* * *

It should contain a big rope, whistle (more effective than shouting), flashlight, a portable mirror to use as reflector, small transistor radio, small hunting knife, compact food stuffs (noodles, biscuits, etc.), drinking water, first aid kit.

If I may add, know your prayers, especially Act of Contrition!
