By Ben Rosario The Makabayan coalition Friday vowed to make the joint police-military team that swooped down on Bayan Muna and Gabriela offices in Bacolod City pay for the alleged crackdown against critics of the Duterte administration. In a statement issued Friday, the Makabayan bloc, composed of six solons representing progressive partylist organizations, said it will file “counter-charges” against the “lowest PO1 to the highest generals” who were involved in the raid in Negros Occidental. Aside from the Gabriela and Bayan Muna offices, also raided on Halloween night was the office of the National Federation of Sugar Workers in Bacolod City. At least 62 persons were arrested during the series of police raids. “Pres. Duterte will no longer be there in 2022 to protect those who violated the rights of the people and they will definitely be held to account for their crimes,” the Makabayan said. Several members of various progressive organizations were also arrested during the simultaneous raids staged by police and military personnel.  The government team was armed with a search warrant issued by Quezon City Regional Trial Court Judge Cecilyn Burgos Villafert. The political coalition demanded the immediate release of those arrested, insisting that the evidence against them were “planted.” “This new wave of crackdown unleashed by the Marcos incarnate Duterte must be condemned and opposed. We will not let this dictator-wannabe succeed in his demonic project to silence the critics of his anti-people and anti-democratic regime,” said Rep Ferdinand Gaite of Bayan Muna. He added: “Clearly, Bayan Muna and other progressive organizations are being targeted as they have been staunch critics of Duterte’s innumerable and insufferable anti-Filipino policies.” Gabriela Women's Party represented by Rep. Arlene Brosas also assailed the “series of attacks” against progressive organizations and activitist. “We strongly deplore this state-sponsored Halloween crackdown just as when most Filipinos are solemnly remembering their loved ones and when courts, government offices are on holiday and unable to process the release of those unjustly detained,” the Gabriela said in a statement. According to Gabriela, the Manila Police District arrested Friday morning Cora Agovida, chairperson of Gabriela-Manila.  Also apprehended during the raid apparently staged at their residence were Agovida’s husband, Mikhael Bartolome and their two minor children. Police claimed that they have seized a gun and a grenade during the raid. Gabriela said the police accusations were preposterous, adding that the pieces of evidence were clearly “planted” as part of the Duterte administration’s bid to silence critics. Meanwhile, the  Kabataan Party-list also issued a strongly-worded condemnation of the PNP-AFP operations. “There are really monsters roaming the streets of Manila and Bacolod this Halloween, preying on innocent people and snatching them under the cover of darkness,” stated the partylist organization represented by Rep. Sara Jane Elago.
