PH records 4,000 new infections, bringing total COVID-19 cases to 257,863

The country confirmed another 4,000 new COVID-19 infections and reported 186 coronavirus fatalities, its highest in a single day, Saturday.

The new fatalities pushed the country’s death toll to 4,292, surpassing the previous record of 162 deaths last July 12. Thirty-six died this month, 63 in August, 59 in July, 24 in June, three in May, and one in April.

However, the number of recoveries also jumped to 187,116 after 659 more patients got well.

The Department of Health (DoH) reported 4,935 new cases, bringing the country’s cumulative total to 257,863 with 66,455 patients currently undergoing treatment.

DoH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire recently said that they are expecting the increase in the number of cases due to delayed reporting.

The National Capital Region accounts for more than half of the newly reported cases at 2,619, followed by Cavite with 343, Laguna with 258, Rizal with 227, and Negros Occidental with 177.

The DoH said 8,339 health care workers in the country have tested positive for COVID-19; 7,600 have recovered, 54 have died, and 685 are active case.

The Philippines still has the most number of COVID-19 cases in Southeast Asia, followed by Indonesia and Singapore. Globally, there are now 27,486,960 COVID-19 cases with 894,983 deaths, based on the data of the World Health Organization.
