San Sebastian College was given a tougher than expected challenge by Adamson University but the defending champions SSC spikers managed to pull off a hard-earned 25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 26-24 win Tuesday night to firm up their hold of the solo third spot in the sixth Shakey’s V-League at The Arena in San Juan City.
The SSC lasses, who still looked out of sync following the departure of five star players, needed a late fourth set surge from Analyn Benito and Margarita Pepito to take the fight out of the Lady Falcons en route to their fifth win in six starts.
Benito, the NCAA’s best spiker awardee, came through with three straight points to spark SSC’s comeback from a 16-20 down before Pepito’s cross court hit gave SSC a commanding 24-22 lead.
Adamson forced the deuce at 24-all after an SSC error and Lourdes Patilano’s spike but San Sebastian sealed the win a Benito spike after Patilano committed an error.
Benito fired with team-high 23 hits, 19 coming from attacks while Pepito and guest player Jinni Mondejar each had 16 points as SSC moved within striking distance of the unbeaten University of Santo Tomas Tigresses (6-0) and the second-running Far Eastern University Lady Tams (6-1), heading into the final elims playdate of the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza.
