The Quezon City Council led by Majority Floor Leader Ariel Enrile Inton Jr. called on the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to act on the reported illegal registration of non-residents of the city that were brought and paid by certain political candidates.

An information received by Inton showed that political candidates aspiring for important position in Quezon City has already resorted to dirty tactics even though the campaign period is still far away.

Inton called on Comelec Chairman Jose Melo to guarantee the sanctity and cleanness of the final voters’ list in order to assure that only legitimate residents of the city can and would vote this coming May 2010 elections.

“But it is not just the Comelec who has the obligation to safeguard the cleanliness of the election next year. All of true residents of the city must unite and help each other in order to assure an honest election,” said Inton.

Informations that reached the camp of Inton divulged that other political parties has gathered and paid residents of other Metro Manila cities as far as Malabon and adjacent provinces such as Rizal, Bulacan, and Cavite. These unscrupulous registrants were provided by their recruiters with valid resident ID and other documents to prove that they are proper residents of the city.

Other details said that recruits from Malabon and Caloocan are fetched by a pick-up that belonged to a known politician, from Monumento in Caloocan and were brought to Barangay San Nicolas in Quezon City. They are then ferried to the local Comelec branch in the city.

Inton added that the record-breaking lines that were seen in Quezon City can be attributed to the “hakot” registrants brought by devious political candidate.

He also said that some employees of Comelec has a hand in the illegal registration, Inton said that they will not immediately run after them but will focus on guarding the final voters’ list in the exclusion proceedings that will be administered by the Comelec.

During the exclusion proceedings, officials of the Comelec will verify and re-verify suspicious persons and documents submitted to them especially if a household who has 10 or more voters who applied for registration.
