Kaye wants to be an actress, not a star

After her successful stint in one of the episodes of ABS-CBN’s “Bud Brothers” series, Kaye Abad is again doing well in her TV show “Precious Hearts Romances Presents Somewhere in My Heart.”
With two consecutive hit shows, the 27-year-old actress is making a successful comeback not only on television but in showbiz in general. And it seems that she didn’t take a hiatus from showbiz for a few years as her shows are helping her reclaim lost time and again place her in the limelight!
“I’m very thankful that I was able to come back after leaving showbiz for a couple of years. I was surprised to see myself working hard again. But I was able to adjust and I’m back to my old routine in showbiz like before,” said Kaye in Filipino.
She admitted that it was her decision to lay low from her career despite her popularity and being one of the “in-demand actresses” then. It can be remembered that Kaye was catapulted to fame years ago with the hit youth-oriented drama series “Tabing Ilog” where she was paired with John Lloyd Cruz.
According to her, she simply wanted to have time for herself, her family and friends. And she made use of her time by planning her life. “I enjoyed planning my days or making plans with friends and being available knowing that I don’t have work the following day,” she smiled.
The actress also confessed that she wasn’t the type who would think of fame as her goal in joining showbiz. Even when she was climbing up the ladder of stardom, she still possessed a “cool” take on her showbiz career. She wasn’t competing with anybody nor was she aggressive in landing more roles!
“I always explain to people that I’m happy with a steady career. I’m happy with whatever jobs ABS-CBN would give me then,” she related. “To quote Sam Milby, I don’t want to be a star, I want to be an actor. I don’t want to reach a point that I won’t have time for myself anymore. I’m doing this because I enjoy it. I enjoy acting and I’m not acting because I need to.”
She stressed though that her outlook is not because her family is well-to-do. As an actress she values more her craft than the fame or money that could result from it.
“I really want to be an actress. I want to be known as a respected actress like Cherry Pie Picache, Jean Garcia and Eula Valdez… as an actress I want to pick the right projects for me that are challenging and that would help me become a respected actress,” opined Kaye.
In “Precious Hearts Romances Presents Somewhere in My Heart,” Kaye plays a nun, Femi, who met her college crush Aaron (played by Guji Lorenzana) after 10 years. The story revolves around how Guji would tell Kaye of his feelings. This is also the second time that Kaye and Guji are paired in a TV series.
“The challenge for me and our director (Cathy Garcia-Molina) was how to come out with a character that’s different from Pepper in ‘Bud Brothers.’ Femi and Pepper are similar in a sense because they are both ‘makulit,’” injected Kaye.
For Kaye, after her successful love team with John Lloyd Cruz in “Tabing Ilog,” her tandem with Guji is the second successful one. She recalled that her tandem with Marvin Agustin as well as other young actors weren’t as successful and followed by fans. “Our love team is one of the pairs ABS-CBN experimented with and I was surprised that it worked. I never expected that we would have a following,” she quipped.
She attributed their on-screen chemistry to their work where they got to know each other well. After their “Bud Brothers” episode ended, she said that they became closer because she, Guji and the cast usually hang out together.
“I’m also surprised that our love team worked because I never expected this when I came to ABS-CBN. I came here as a singer… Kaye is a very good actress and we’ve become good friends,” remarked Kaye’s leading man Guji.
As to rumors that something romantic is brewing between him and Kaye, Guji pointed out that it was early to tell since they’re just enjoying each other’s company. Despite being single and available, he doesn’t know if he can say the same thing about Kaye.
“She’s a great person and I like her a lot… of course there’s a possibility that I’d take it to the next level. Time can only tell. It really depends on how things develop. It’s still early. If ever I would never hide my feelings if ever I felt something,” Guji said.
As for Kaye, she straightened out rumors that the reason she went back to acting was that she and Chito Miranda, vocalist of the band Parokya ni Edgar, were headed towards “splitsville.”
“We are okay and we still go out,” said Kaye.
Next in line for Kaye Abad is the soap opera “Ruby” which is already in the works.
