Boat master perishes, 4 crew members rescued in waters off Zamboanga City

ILIGAN CITY – Four fishermen were rescued in the sea waters off San Mateo Point, Sinunuc by Navy troops, who were sailing from Naval Station Romulo Espaldon to Varadero de Cawit in Zamboanga City at around 5 p.m., Monday, September 14.

The sailors onboard BA492 initially rescued four fishermen standing on a capsized banca MB Elsa 3.

But the rescued fishermen informed the navy crew that their boat master was still trapped inside the capsized banca.

Using appropriate rescue techniques, the Fourth Boat Attack Division and the Naval Special Operation Unit 6 were able to retrieve the unconscious boat master.

The boat master was immediately provided with first aid treatment, and was rushed to Zamboanga City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on-arrival. Cause of death was asphyxiation secondary to accidental drowning.

The four others were brought to Camp Navarro General Hospital for proper medical attention and debriefing.

The casualty was identified as Enricky Brocka, 55, while the survivors were identified as Erickson Broka, 19, Richard Brocka, 30, Oroy Gay, 27, and George Alvarasen, 36, all from Pagadian City.

Richard and Erickson were sons of Enricky.

Naval Forces Western Mindanao commander Rear Admiral Erick Kagaoan said they have provided the necessary assistance to the victims of the sea mishap, and their respective families have been contacted.

 “We extend our deepest sympathy to the sons and relatives of the boat master who perished after their boat was capsized due to foul weather yesterday afternoon,” said Western Mindanao Command (WestMincom) Commandr Major General Corleto Vinluan, Jr.

“Rest assured that we will provide all sorts of assistance to the victims of this very unfortunate incident,” Vinluan added.
