Manila Rep. John Marvin "Yul Servo" Nieto has batted for monthly P3,000 pension and full medical insurance coverage for comfort women.
(MANILA BULLETIN)
He joined Deputy Speaker and Taguig City Rep. Pia Cayetano in pushing for the passage of a bill seeking to benefit comfort women.
"The history of this country is tainted with the atrocities done by the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II. Though the Japanese government has made amends to make peace with the past, some abuses cannot be forgotten and the least that the Philippine government can do is recognize and compensate these women who have suffered for years by remaining silent about their history hoping that someday they will be redeemed and saved by the country that values their lives," Nieto, a movie actor, said.
Nieto filed House Bill 8309 or the proposed Comfort Women Compensation and Benefit Act which requires the National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women (NCRFW) to determine the authenticity of the claims and identities of comfort women with the assistance of various accredited cause-oriented women's groups.
Under the bill, the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (Philhealth) is mandated to provide free full medical insurance to comfort women as may be determined by the NCRFW.
The Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) shall provide for the P3,000 monthly pension of comfort women, the bill provides.
