Molina captures silver

HANOI, Vietnam — Miguel Molina, preparing for the Southeast Asian Games next month in Laos, went under two minutes in the 200-meter individual medley to capture the silver medal in the Asian Indoor Games Wednesday night.
The United States-trained swimmer engaged top qualifier Dmitrey Gordiyenko of Kazakhstan in a tight battle through most of the race before fading at the finish, clocking 1:59.89, slicing by nearly four seconds his time in the preliminaries.
Gordiyenko won the event in 1:57.50 to account for one of 12 gold medals won by Kazakhstan so far.
Taiwan’s Chi Chieh Hsu settled for the bronze in 2:00.88, edging Iran’s Said Malekae Ashtiani, who came in 2:01.12.
Molina’s feat capped a big day for the Philippines that saw boxer Annie Albania win the gold in the bantamweight division and Mitchell Martinez take the silver in the light welterweight class.
Early Thursday, the Philippines won a bronze in wushu courtesy of Jennifer Lagilag who lost to home bet Nguyen Thi Bicn, 0-2, in the semifinals at the Trinh Hoai Duc gym.
