CEBU CITY – Opposition leaders in this city recently launched an advocacy aimed at uniting the north and south districts here to further provide basic services to the Cebuanos.

Lahug village chieftain Mary Ann de los Santos and businessman Jonathan Guardo, who both lead the opposition group in the north and south districts, respectively, said they want to establish a “north and south districts without borders for the good of the Cebuanos in the city.”

The north and south districts are the two congressional districts of this city.

During a press conference Friday, both Guardo and Delos Santos said they are launching an advocacy of districts without borders and new politics that defies traditional method of “traditional politicians.”

“We want to tear down borders and bring to the south district whatever good the north has and vice versa. We believe we can do this, and we believe this will do good to the City of Cebu,” Guardo said.

De los Santos, meanwhile, said economic development and progress will not be further achieved if there is no unity between the leaders of the north and south districts.

“We both will sacrifice anything for Cebu City and offer a new form of politics that is not a politics of personality but of agenda,” said the two, who also expressed their intention to run for Congress in the north and south districts.

City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, however, belittled the opposition, citing statistics from the 2007 elections, which he said will prove that the Guardo-De los Santos tandem would have a hard time winning.
