Subang settles for silver
HANOI, Vietnam — Maricel Subang settled for a silver medal in muay event on Saturday after absorbing a crushing 0-5 defeat from Thailand’s Konnika Nuanboriboon in the Asian Indoor Games at the Rach Mieu Gymnasium in Ho Chi Mihn City.
Subang put on a gallant stand but the Thai proved too classy for her in their flyweight encounter.
The wide margin given by the five judges who officiated the four-round tussle, however, did not reflect the gallantly the 25-year-old Abatan Buguias,
Benguet showed against her 18-year-old rival who incidentally is the inaugural champion of the event when it was held in Bangkok three years ago.
Subang also landed combinations on Nuanboriboon, but apparently the judges did not count it for the Filipino bet.
In fact, when Vietnam referee Kim Anh Dang raised the hand of Nuanboriboon, Subang just shook her head in utter disappointment.
"Ganyan talaga, wala tayong magagawa, ang judges ang nagdedesisyon," said Muay Association of the Philippines (MAP) officer-in-charge and delegation head Red Dumuk.
The three-man muay team thus ended its campaign with a silver and two bronze medals ending muay's gold contribution to the Philippine cause. Muay won a gold each in the past two editions of the event.
