A potential weather disturbance was spotted Sunday east of Northern Mindanao but the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) quickly downplayed the effects of the shallow low pressure area (SLPA).

The SLPA – a rain-inducing weather system – was spotted by the government’s weather office 180 kilometers (kms) east of Northern Mindanao at 2 a.m. Sunday.

However, PAGASA weather forecaster Mario Palafox said at 2 p.m. Sunday the SLPA could no longer be seen on their satellite as it may have already dissipated.

“Sobrang bilis ng pagkilos niya kaya baka natunaw na,” Palafox told Manila Bulletin over the phone.

No other LPAs are expected to affect the country this week, PAGASA said paving the way for a good weather to be experienced in Luzon except for scattered rains.

The weakening of the northeast monsoon will no longer cause rains in northern and central Luzon, Palafox said.

Meanwhile, Mindanao and Visayas will experience cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms becoming widespread rains over the eastern sections which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

“The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms,” PAGASA said.

“Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Luzon, Visayas and coming from the northeast and east over Eastern Mindanao and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough. Light to moderate winds blowing from the east and northeast will prevail over the rest of Mindanao with slight to moderate seas except during thunderstorms,” the government’s weather bureau added.
