Bongbong seeks truce with rebels
An opposition lawmaker on Friday called for a six-month ceasefire between the government and armed insurgents like the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA).
Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. suggested that a truce be enforced from December 1 until May 30 next year. Marcos said a cessation of hostilities will make sure that “Filipinos will not only spend a serene Christmas but a peaceful May 10, 2010 general elections as well.”
He urged the government to discuss his proposal with the MILF and the CPP-NPA for the possibility of a bilateral ceasefire. “If the MILF and the communist rebels won’t agree, a unilateral ceasefire declaration from government will do,” Marcos said.
