Bishop Angelito Lampon of Jolo is the new archbishop of Cotabato

By Leslie Ann Aquino The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) in a news post said Pope Francis on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Cardinal Orlando Quevedo, the archbishop of Cotabato, and named Bishop Angelito Lampon as his successor.

(Davao Catholic Herald / MANILA BULLETIN) It was four years ago when the 79-year-old cardinal submitted his resignation upon reaching the canonical age of retirement, but the Pope only accepted it now. That time, the Pope even appointed Quevedo as cardinal, the first from Mindanao and the eighth cardinal from the Philippines. Born in M’lang, Cotabato, on March 1, 1950, Bishop Lampon was ordained a priest for the congregation of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) on March 26, 1977. His assignments were as follows: parish priest in Lebak, Sultan Kudarat and in the Cathedral of Cotabato (1977-1978); staff member of the Notre Dame Archdiocesan Seminary (1979-1981); director of Postulants and Scholastics of the OMI (1988-1992); Provincial Superior, OMI Philippine Province (1988-1992) and General Counsellor of OMI at their general administration in Rome (1992-1997). On November 21, 1997, he was appointed apostolic vicar of Jolo and became part of the Rome-based Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue in 2012. In the CBCP, Lampon headed the Commission on Interreligious Dialogue from 2011 to 2017. Currently, he is the chairman of the Commission on Ecumenical Affairs. Quevedo will serve as “apostolic administrator” of the archdiocese until Lampon formally assumes his post. He could also still function as cardinal until he reached the age of 80 in which he can no longer vote for a new pope.
