Koreans show way in ITF tilt
Koreans Lee Ye-ra and Yoo Mi toppled separate rivals on Friday to barge into the semifinals of the Holcim- ITF Women’s Circuit Week 1 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The second-seeded Lee dominated fifth pick Liu Shaozhuo of China, 6-4, 6-4, while No. 4 Yoo trounced seventh seed compatriot Han Sung-he, 6-1, 6-1.
The 22-year-old Lee, a member of the Korean team which competed in the Federation Cup early this year, arranged a duel with a dangerous Juan Ting-fei of Taiwan, a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5) winner over Belgium’s Gally De Wael.
Yoo will next face eighth pick Nicha Lertpitaksinchai of Thailand, who whipped compatriot Peangthan Pliphuech, 6-1, 6-3.
Nicha battled through three double faults against a lone ace in the match that lasted a little over an hour.
The world No. 825 held her serve in the first set, but stumbled into a 0-2 hole in the second when Pliphuech gained steam with powerful strokes.
Nicha quickly bounced back and won the next three games for a 3-2 lead, before Pliphuech broke her serve for 3-all. It turned out to be Pliphuech’s last stand as Nicha came back and closed out the match in the next three games.
Lee teamed up with compatriot Kim Sun-jung to blank third pick He Sirui and Liu Shaozhuo, 6-0, 6-0, and clinch the first doubles finals seat.
Lee and Kim will face the winner between Yoo and Han Na-lae of Korea and top seeds Beatrice Gumulya of Indonesia and Han Sung-hee of Korea.
