Hope, Angelicum bag NCR GVL titles

Hope Christian High School and Angelicum College hammered out huge victories last weekend to capture the titles in the fourth Shakey’s Girls’ Volleyball.

The Hope spikers, starring Carol Cerveza, Denden Tan and Rica Eclona, tripped San Antonio de Padua, 25-12, 25-15, 27-25, for the Group A crown while Angelicum mangled a disorganized St. James Academy squad, 25-20, 25-14, for the Group B plum in this league supported by Toby’s Sports, Mikasa, Asics, and Mighty Sport.

“We practiced hard for this victory and I give credit to the girls for giving their best since the semifinals,” said Hope coach Jerry Yee, whose team will represent the NCR in the Shakey’s Tournament of Champions set in Cebu City where his wards will meet the champions from Bacolod, Iloilo, Tacloban, and Cebu on November 19 to 21.

In the semifinal round, both Hope Christian HS and San Antonio de Padua shocked defending champion University of Santo Tomas, 25-21, 25-20, and 12-25, 25-22, 25-22, respectively.

The Group A Most Valuable Player award went to Alyssa Valdez of UST, twice winner of this award. Other special awardees were: Best Blocker - Rialen Sante (San Antonio de Padua), Best Receiver – Rica Eclona (Hope Christian HS), Best Server – Alexine Cabaños (De La Salle Zobel), Best Libero – Cienne Cruz (Hope Christian HS), Best Setter - Kim Fajardo (University of Santo Tomas) and Best Coach – Jerry Yee (Hope Christian HS). In Group B, three awards – Most Valuable Player, Best Blocker and Best Attacker -- went to Jorella de Jesus of St. James Academy. Other awardees were: Best Receiver – Jollie Lapiad (Angelicum College), Best Setter – Angelica Loresto (Imus Institute), Best Server – Ronjean Momo (Angelicum College), Best Libero – Ina Hipolito (U.P. Integrated School) and Best Coach – Kenneth Eugenio (Angelicum College).

Central Philippines University won the Iloilo leg by beating Sun Yat Sen School, 25-21, 25-19, 25-15 while Eastern Visayas University won the Tacloban leg via a 25-17, 25-18, 25-23 decision over Leyte National High School.
