Bureau of Customs (BOC) chief Isidro Lapeña continues to enjoy the trust and confidence of President Duterte despite the large shabu shipment that slipped past authorities, Malacañang said Monday.

(RESIDENTIAL PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN) The President however expects the customs bureau to take measures, including enhancing coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), to run after those behind the smuggling of illegal drugs and prevent a repeat of the incident, according to his spokesman Harry Roque. "Buo ang paniniwala pa rin ni Presidente kay Gen. Lapeña at ang nais niyang mangyari ay paano masusugpo ito nang matigil ang practice na ito ,” Roque said during a Palace news conference. "He wants to know the bottom of who's behind the importation and of course he's raring to apply full force of the law against those behind these importations," Roque said, adding the President has given priority to the investigation into the drug shipment. Authorities recently failed to seize P6.8 billion worth of illegal drugs smuggled by an international drug syndicate into the country. PDEA agents found magnetic scrap filters where the drugs were supposedly hidden during a warehouse raid in Cavite last week. Roque said the customs bureau must boost intelligence gathering and work closely with PDEA to stop any shipment of illegal drugs into the country. A review of the customs inspection procedures should also be considered, he added. "May tiwala siya kay Gen. Lapeña, may tiwala siya sa PDEA. Inaasahan niya na magkakaroon ng mas malapit na ugnayan ang PDEA at Bureau of Customs dahil nanggaling naman sa PDEA itong si Gen. Lapeña ," he said. "Walang dahilan para hindi magkaroon ng mas malapitang koordinasyon pero kinakailangan na masugpo ito at kinakailangan na ma-identify sino ang behind this para ma-trace kung sino ang hahabulin ," he added. Roque said the use of magnetic filters showed the illegal drug traders were becoming "sophisticated" in smuggling drugs into the country. He said the contents of such containers are undetected by x-ray machines. "Yan ang problema dyan so talagang bago na naman itong modus operandi ng mga, bagong modus ito ng ating mga kalaban ," he said. "It shows na talagang sophisticated ang kalaban dito sa gyera laban sa droga. Dahil ginagamit nila yung mga magnetic lifters, na talaga naman sa loob ng magnetic lifter hindi makikita ng x-ray. so alam niya ang pangyayari," he said.
