Adamson, Ateneo go for V-League semis slots
Games this Friday (The Arena, San Juan)
2 p.m. — Adamson vs CSB
4 p.m. — Ateneo vs UST
Adamson and Ateneo shoot for all-important wins against separate rivals this Friday to determine the third and fourth semifinalists in the sixth Shakey’s V-League at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Falcons and the Lady Eagles are tied for fourth with identical 6-5 record, and both squads must win their last quarterfinal assignments to book a sudden death for the last semifinal berth.
Between the two, Adamson has the bigger chance to clinch the last ticket.
For one, the Lady Falcons will only have the College of St. Benilde Lady to face at 2 p.m.
The Lady Eagles, on the other hand, will have a hill, if not a mountain to climb to get past the No. 1 semifinalist University of Santo Tomas, which is seeking to complete a five-game sweep of the quarters.
Defending champion San Sebastian finished the quarterfinal round at No. 2 with an 8-4 card. Far Eastern University is at third with a 7-5, but its outright semis bid still remains shaky.
A three-way tie at third would ensue should Adamson and Ateneo hurdle their respective rivals today.
Both the Lady Falcons and the Lady Eagles could actually drop FEU and clinch the No. 3 and No. 4 spots should they beat their rivals in straight sets.
To clinch the No. 3 seat, Adamson must limit St. Benilde to a total of 56 points (or 19 points per set). If the Lady Falcons can do it and the Lady Eagles beat the Tigresses, FEU and Ateneo will have to dispute the fourth semis berth.
The Lady Eagles can also notch the third spot but it must hold the Tigresses to just 51 points (17 points per set) which is too hard to accomplish considering the way UST has been playing of late.
UST coach Shaq Delos Santos even warned earlier that they will not be generous to Ateneo although they could actually afford to drop the game.
“We know we don’t need that win, but our goal is to play 100 percent every game,” Delos Santos said, whose squad clobbered Ateneo in straight sets during the first round.
“Our objective is to get ready for the Final Four, so we can’t afford to just give away that game to Ateneo.”
Fille Cainglet, Angeline Gervacio, Denise Acevedo, and Gretchen Ho will be at the forefront of Ateneo’s assault.
