Biotech Week set Nov. 22-29

Biotechnology is increasingly becoming important to agriculture, especially in the light of changing climate and the need to achieve sufficiency not only in the food we eat but also in other agricultural products. And as a means to promote the science of biotechnology, November 22 to 29 has been declared Biotechnology Week. However, the various activities will be held starting Monday, November 23 at the Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center, SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City.
A forum on business opportunities in biotechnology will be conducted right after the opening ceremonies next Monday. This is where investors can spot possible business ventures they can undertake with the use of new technology. Also to be held on Monday is a national council meeting of the Biotechnology Information and Organization Network.
The activities during the week are addressed to different sets of audiences. For instance, on November 24, the BIONet National Congress and the 2nd Malunggay Congress and Scientific Forum will be held.
To be held on November 25 are Biotech for Kids, Biotek Pangkabuhayan, DNA forensic workshop for officers of the PNP’s Women and Children’s Desk, and techno-mart.
On November 26, there will be a seminar on genetically modified drought-resistant crops, educational forum for high school students, and the awarding of the J. Burgos Awards for Biotech Journalism.
On November 27, the National Biotech Conference for Teachers will be held at the Heritage Hotel in Pasay City. However, the NIMBUS Scientific Conference and General Assembly 2009 and Techno-mart will be held at the Mall of Asia’s Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center.
On November 28, there will be a public forum on health (Newborn screening and vaccine) and techno-mart. The on the last day, there will be a public forum on biosafety, on avian and swine flu, and techno-mart.
Meanwhile, also on Monday, there will be an educational forum in Davao City to improve the understanding of secondary school students, teachers, and the public on current advances, issues, applications, and career opportunities in biotechnology.
