Robredo visits Trillanes, says his ordeal unifies opposition

Vice President Ma. Leonor “Leni” Robredo on Thursday went to the Senate and visited embattled Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, who faces arrest after President Duterte voided his amnesty.

After briefly staying in the office of Senate Minority Leader Frank Drilon, Robredo went to the office of Trillanes where he has been staying for three days since the release of Duterte's Proclamation No. 572. The Vice President, who leads the Liberal Party (LP), said the issue involving Trillanes strengthens members of the opposition and has united them even more, despite what she described as an attempt to harrass and silence dissenting opinion. “’Yung nangyayari kay Sen. Trillanes, lalo pa niya na-unify ’yung opposition, lalo pang binigyan ng dahilan para lalong magkaisa (What they are doing to Sen. Trillanes is unifying the opposition further, they gave us more reasons unite even more),” Robredo told Senate reporters before proceeding to Trillanes’ office. Robredo said she is confident that Trillanes can handle the challenge he is facing. She reiterated her assurance that she and her fellow opposition members are backing him in questioning Duterte's proclamation. “Alam ko si Trillanes, kaya niya 'yong sarili niya. Sa akin, malaman niya lang na hindi man kami magkapareho ng partido, alam namin na mali ’yung ginagawa sa kanya. Dahil mali 'yong ginagwa sa kanya, nakikiisa kami sa kanya,” she said. Robredo maintained her disapproval of Duterte’s decision to nullify Trillanes’ amnesty for supposedly not filing his application and not admitting his guilt. She reiterated that the government should exhaust its powers in addressing current crises in the country, particularly, the soaring inflation rates and shortage of affordable rice supply.
