No secret MILF talks – Abaya
Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Secretary Annabelle T. Abaya assured on Friday that “there will be no secrets, no hidden agenda and no fast deals,” when it comes to peace talks with the secessionist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
Abaya made the comment in response to reports quoting North Cotabato Gov. Emmanuel Pinol that the government is secretly drafting a peace accord to be presented to the MILF.
She said she already called the governor and invited him to Manila to discuss the matter. Abaya also said no such draft is ready because “they are still in the study stage.”
“This (secret draft deal) is totally false. I assure you there is no such thing,” Abaya said in a press statement.
“I spoke with my old friend Manny Pinol yesterday (Thursday) and invited him for a talk to assure him and our people that there will be no secret deals and everything will be transparent because we intend to consult the people on our proposals,” she added.
Pinol was earlier quoted as saying that there was “something fishy” in the supposed draft because the government reportedly did not consult the stakeholders in Mindanao.
Pinol, it would be recalled, also questioned before the Supreme Court the controversial Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain (MOA-AD) which the high court ruled as unconstitutional.
The signing of the MOA-AD in Kuala Lumpur was aborted after the Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional.
Abaya, during an earlier interview, made it clear that the government would like to revive the stalled peace talks not only with the MILF but also with the Communist Party of the Philippines/New People’s Army/National Democratic Front soonest.
She expressed the hope of resuming negotiations with the MILF and communist rebels before the year ends.
