Boy Abunda defines the ‘bottom line’

Although new and innovative products swarm the market regularly, talent mogul and TV host Boy Abunda knows which ones ultimately deserve his imprimatur.
The King of Talk had a lot to say about canned tuna crossing the corned beef territory.
“Ang pagkakaiba kasi ng corned beef at corned tuna ay ang corned tuna ay lasang tuna. Ang corned beef ay lasang corned beef. We just want to differentiate [between the two],” said Boy, who has been the Argentina Corned Beef endorser for five years now.
Boy emphasized that their latest brand positioning is not meant to demean their competitor.
“Our intention is not to mislead consumers. That’s why I will only speak in behalf of Argentina. Iba pa rin ang tunay. Our product has 100 percent lasang corned beef, and it has 50% more protein. As for the claims of others, kanila na ‘yon,” he said.
Jeannie Cui-Abejo, AVP for Marketing of the Pacific Meat Co., Inc. (which also owns Century Tuna and 555), insisted that in terms of health benefits, tuna and corned beef have their own pluses.
“Meat has more protein than tuna. Sa tuna naman, inherent sa kanila ang Omega 3, so ibang aspect naman ng pagiging healthy ‘yong sa isda,” she explained.
She added that they have put in additional nutritional value for their product.
“We are conscious na kapag tinapat mo siya sa other products, baka may misconception na unhealthy. [But] corned beef is not unhealthy, because it’s also fortified with zinc and iron. So we can say both corned beef and corned tuna are healthy,” said she.
Boy believes that with advertising comes a social responsibility of providing accurate information to consumers.
“The public deserves to know the difference so as to have clarity in deciding. There is a social responsibility [na kaakibat].
“Dapat alam ng mga consumers kung ano ang kanilang binibili. That’s why somebody has to point out [the difference],” he said.
On a more personal level, the TV host shared that corned beef is his comfort food of choice.
“Laking corned beef [ako]. Comfort food na sa [akin] ‘yan. Mura [siya], and I think this is the probinsyano in me. Tingin mo palang alam mo na...corned beef,” Boy related.
Boy was asked to make an analogy on the much-talked about Manny Pacquiao-Jinkee Pacquiao-Krista Ranillo love triangle vis-a-vis tuna and corned beef:
That is, which of the two women is a corned beef? A corned tuna?
“I don’t know the story, but Jinkee is the wife so she is the corned beef.. Pero sa buhay ni Krista, she also has the chance and the power to be corned beef. Everybody has a right to be real,” he mused.
He advised the public to be more discerning and less judgmental on the issue.
“Dapat tayo ay careful at dapat matalas din ang ating pandinig at ang ating paningin dahil napakadaling manghusga. But we have to know the facts. Sa mga napapanood natin ngayon there is the married couple and there is the other woman.
“And in this story the other woman is destroying the marriage. 'Yon ang alam nating kuwento. But what do we really know?”
He also offered Manny and Jinkee words of wisdom.
“Manny entered in a marriage, he has a vow, he has a covenant, with his God and with his wife, so ayusin kung ano ang dapat ayusin,” he said. “Body language-wise, he’s trying to fix up the marriage. He should.”
As for Jinkee: "Exert every possible effort to know the truth. Again, take it from your husband, kausapin mo. At hangga't kaya mo, as long as there is still love, fight for it.
"You have the right for that marriage. Asawa ka, eh. And I know saving the marriage for the sake of the children is one of the reasons, but don't just do it for the children. Do it for yourself. Do it for your husband.”
And what of the supposed “other” woman?
"I wanna ask her, what is the truth? Totoo bang lahat itong aming nababasa? Well, she's being crucified now... Do you think you deserve the crucifixion? Do you deserve all the name-calling that is happening now?
“My follow-up question would depend on whether she will say yes or no."
On that note, Boy announced that he will be deviating from his showbiz roots hosting for “Bottom Line,” a political talk show which premieres on Nov. 28 on ABS-CBN.
