Police junk gun plea of trader in Cosim case
The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Saturday junked the appeal of a businessman, who allegedly pointed a gun at television anchor Cheryl Cosim over a traffic row in Quezon City early this month, to defer the revocation of his license and permit to carry firearms.
The PNP’s decision had left businessman Richard Ordoñez no option but to surrender the firearms he used in allegedly threatening Cosim, said Chief Supt. Leonardo Espina, PNP spokesman.
"As the regulating agency for firearms ownership and possession, the PNP will not tolerate unwarranted actions and abuses by irresponsible gun owners", said Espina.
Chief Supt. Ireno Bacolod, director of the PNP-Civil Security Group (CSG), stressed that the PNP has legal basis in revoking the firearms license and the permit to carry guns outside the residence, being the issuing authority and based on the provisions stipulated as a condition for the two permits.
Bacolod cited a provision stating that the commission of any crime involving a licensed firearm is a ground for revocation especially if a case has already been filed in court.
Cosim earlier filed charges before the QC Prosecutor’s Office against Ordoñez.
Bacolod clarified that Ordoñez’s could still avail of the gun privilege once he is cleared or acquitted by the court on the charge filed against him by Cosim.
