Subic starts P502-M airport rehab

By Jonas Reyes SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — With the growing number of incoming flights at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) is set to pour in P502 million in rehabilitating the Subic Bay International Airport (SBIA).

Eisma said the SBIA’s rehabilitation would make it a most viable alternative to the country’s premier airport, Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila. Eisma said that the funding for the P502-million rehabilitation program will come from the Procurement Service of the Department of Budget and Management (PS-DBM). The rehabilitation of the SBIA started after the agency procured an Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) worth P51 million, which is not part of the P502 million funding. The weather system is already installed and operational, providing continuous, real-time information regarding weather conditions. Eisma said that the SBIA is ready to accommodate planes since its communication and night-time capability is fully operational, adding that the airport has already accommodated flights from Bangkok that were diverted to SBIA from Clark Airport.
