Arevalo prevents all-Patrimonio final
Four-time champion Czarina Mae Arevalo on Saturday prevented a family affair in the Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open finals as the fifth seed dumped Anna Clarice Patrimonio, 6-2, 6-3, at the PCA claycourts in Paco, Manila.
Arevalo, lat year’s runner-up to deposed champion Bambi Zoleta, needed only one hour and 20 minutes to set up a title showdown with Patrimonio’s elder sister, Anna Christine.
The elder Patrimonio, the top seed in this P500,000 tournament presented by Cebuana Lhuillier, whipped sixth pick Jessica Agra, 6-3, 6-2, for her first finals appearance here.
“Medyo alam ko na yung laro niya. Dinaan ko na lang sa mental plays at malalakas na palo,” said Anna Christine, who is eyeig a second crown after winning the Metro Open last February.
The 17-year-old Anna Christine held her serve all throughout while mixing her shots well to break Agra’s serve in the sixth game of the first set to set the tone for the victory, cruising to the first set win and putting on a dominating show in the second frame.
Anna Christine expects a grueling match against Arevalo, who beat her in the semis last year.
“Mas madaming takbo for sure, so magpe-prepare ako. Medyo mababa kasi ang physicial condition ko ngayon dahil medyo nahinto ako for four months,” the daughter of former four-time PBA MVP Alvin Patrimonio said.
