Until now, Sta. Lucia Realty mentor Boyet Fernandez calls Barako Bull by its previous name, ‘Red Bull’. But even with the inadvertent mistake, he knows that nothing is easy against the Energy Boosters.
The Realtors shot miserably against the Energy Boosters in regulation, but still found a way to hack out an 80-77 overtime win Sunday night in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum. Joseph Yeo rose to the occasion for the Realtors, scoring six of his 16 points in the extra period.
Down by a point, 67-66, early in OT, the 6-foot-1 Yeo canned a pair of free throws off Felix Belano and nailed a tough baseline jumper following a missed three-point attempt by Barako’s Aris Dimaunahan.
Yeo’s four straight points gave the Realtors a 70-67 cushion with 2:54 left in the exra period.
The Realtors shot 83.3 percent (5-of-6) from the field in OT, after making just 32.8 percent (20-of-61) in the first four periods. Overall, Sta. Lucia Realty made 25-of-67 or 37.3 percent, while Barako Bull went 28-of-76 or 36.8 percent.
Forward Gabby Espinas contributed 16 points with 10 rebounds, while Kelly Williams added 14 and 10 boards for SLR, which improved to 5-3 while Barako Bull dropped to 2-7.
Fernandez, however, was disappointed despite the win.
“Red Bull really did a good job,” Fernandez said, referring to Barako Bull during the postgame interview. “I’ve been emphasizing to them that this is a very dangerous team. But we still played lackluster.”
“At least we got back, Joseph stepped up… Ryan brings his leadership, as well as Kelly. I hope we learned from this,” Fernandez said.
The Realtors increased their lead to five points, 76-71, in OT after Reyes and Espinas each made a lay-up, 1:24 left.
The last time Barako Bull threatened was when Gilbert Lao made a triple, 76-78, but Nelbert Omolon made his free throws off a foul by Leo, 80-76, with 8.6 seconds left to play in the extra period.
The Energy Boosters got 14 points from Yousif Aljamal, while Richard Alonzon had 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Realtors controlled the boards, 53-50, but both teams committed a lot of turnovers as SLR had 23 to Barako Bull’s 24, which Fernandez’s team converted to 19 points.
