Sosa wants Mayol disqualified
Dethroned Mexican champion Edgar Sosa on Monday accused Filipino Rodel Mayol of fighting dirty in their World Boxing Council (WBC) light flyweight bout and wants the result of their title fight be ruled as a no-contest.
Sosa, who officially lost the crown via 2nd round technical knockout to Mayol Sunday (Manila time) in Mexico, claimed that he got hit intentionally on the cheekbone by the Filipino’s forehead that made the Mexican shaky the rest of the way.
“I was really out on my feet and I couldn’t breathe. I had no time to recuperate,” Sosa told the Mexican press immediately after the fight.
Sosa, who was making the 11th defense of his crown, was brought to the hospital after fracturing his cheekbone due to the head butt in the second round which was actually ruled by Puerto Rican referee Roberto Ramirez as an intentional foul.
“I just followed the doctor’s orders who told me to let the fight go on,” said Ramirez who deducted a point from Mayol for the headbutt.
As soon as Sosa stood up and was told by Ramirez that the bout had to continue, Mayol floored the Mexican with a left uppercut.
An obviously dazed Sosa, already bleeding from the nose and his left cheekbone, got up at the count of five and chose to fight after the mandatory eight count.
Mayol then went for the kill and hit Sosa with a flurry of solid shots that forced Ramirez to wave off the fight.
“If he wants a rematch, I’ll be ready. I knew already he will be weak going into the fight because he had to kill himself to make the weight and I felt that during the first round,” said Mayol after the fight.
Sosa’s manager Jacques Deschamps meanwhile said the fight was the third time Mayol has been involved in an incident that was decided due to head butt.
Mayol settled for a draw then a technical decision loss in his back to back bouts with World Boxing Organization (WBO) 108 lb. champion Ivan Calderon that saw the Puerto Rican suffer nasty cuts in both instances.
