Globe reveals broadband leadership foray at RP Telecom International Summit
Globe, a leading telecommunications company in the Philippines, is poised to achieve broadband market leadership in the Philippines as broadband internet continues to be a growth driver today in the telecom landscape.
At the recent Frost & Sullivan Philippines Telecom International Summit 2009, Globe imparted how it embraced the opportunities in the broadband market where it has seen a robust growth on its broadband subscribers. This growth translated to a revenue improvement of about P907 million or 69% from last year to reach P2.2 billion in revenues by the end of September 2009.
“What we are doing is stimulating usage among value subscribers. It is no longer a one-size fits all market. The challenge for operators is to find the applications and new product offers that will drive usage,” said Ernest L. Cu, President and CEO of Globe.
For the third quarter of the year, the broadband business of Globe continued to gain momentum as subscriber base grew almost three-fold to over half a million subscribers, beating full-year expectations. All its broadband products posted record quarterly net additions with its fully mobile internet service Globe Broadband Tattoo leading the way. Globe Broadband Tattoo is the country’s fastest growing mobile broadband service.
Determined to take a big chunk of the broadband market, Globe continues to build its network to accommodate the demand for broadband service, both for nomadic and mobile broadband as well as fixed broadband for homes and businesses.
To bring broadband to more Filipino homes especially to OFW families and to the SMEs, Globe commercially launched its WiMAX network on February 2009 in Cebu City, the first in the country. WiMAX brings together the best that DSL and fixed wireless offers to consumers.
Cu added, “The transmission infrastructure is already there.” Cu was part of the C-Level Executives’ Dialogue that tackled opportunities on the emerging fixed and mobile broadband markets during the summit.
Globe started WiMAX trials as early as 2005 and network rollout began in 2008. Globe has the first and the largest mobile WiMAX network in Southeast Asia to date. WiMAX offers both internet and landline services in the most affordable packages in the industry.
“From a technology perspective WiMAX is mature, proven and tested. It perfectly complements our current build to benefit communities where wired solutions are not as accessible. More than 40% of Filipino families who reside in these areas have OFWs whom they wish to continually stay connected with,” said Cu.
The WiMAX network of Globe now covers more than 100 key broadband markets nationwide.
