Cdr. Jonathan V. Zata, the Director of the Naval Public Affairs Office, said embarked Augusta Westland (AW-109) naval helicopter captured the Philippine Navy vessels in formation with Japanese Ship ISE (DDH182); India Navy Ship SAHYADRI (F19); United States Ship WILLIAM P LAWRENCE (DDG110) and Republic of Singapore Ship TENACIOUS (71) as they sail to Hawaii for the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2018 exercise, the world’s largest international naval exercise.
He said the navy contingent together with the other navies in the group sail is expected to arrive in Honolulu, Hawaii in the next few days.
The exercise is scheduled to conclude on August 5, 2018.
Zata said the Philippine Navy’s participation to RIMPAC 2018 through sending contingents and its largest ship, a frigate and modern naval helicopter is another milestone both for the Philippine Navy and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to build and enhance relationship with other participating navies.
"With the vigorous support from the government and its stakeholders through the modernization program, the Philippine Navy now has the capability to send a contingent to RIMPAC 2018 thus, further fulfilling its diplomatic role in keeping peace and stability in the region," Zata said.
RIMPAC 2018 with its theme, "Capable, Adaptive, Partners” is the 26th exercise in the series that began in 1971. This is the second International Defense and Security Engagement (IDSE) that the Philippine Navy will participate in this year. The first IDSE is in Indonesia where the PN participated in the Multi-national Exercise Komodo 2018.
The Philippine Navy's participation in the undertaking is expected to advance its maritime operational capability to multilateral level thereby increasing readiness and interoperability and enabling the nation’s premiere maritime force to be more effective and efficient in the conduct of its mandated task.
