Alaska tops elims first round
Games Wednesday (Araneta Coliseum)
4 p.m. – Rain or Shine vs Talk ‘N Text
6:30 p.m. – Coca-Cola vs Purefoods
The decision of Alaska to keep an intact lineup worked for the Aces’ advantage as they topped the first elimination phase of the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup.
Alaska currently carries an 8-1 win-loss record after opening the season with six straight wins, but with the battle for two outright Final Four berths heating up, Aces coach Tim Cone expects tougher competition in the second round.
“It’s going to be a close fight,” said Cone.
The Aces opted not to make major adjustments, keeping the nucleus of two-time MVP Willie Miller, LA Tenorio, Sonny Thoss, Reynel Hugnatan, Joe Devance, Tony dela Cruz, Larry Fonacier and Jeff Cariaso.
The only addition was rookie Mike Burtscher, the surprise sixth overall pick in the previous Draft.
Alaska was to face Barako Bull (2-7) at the start of second round, while San Miguel Beer (7-2), which won its last seven games and is at second place with a 7-2 card, collides with Burger King (3-6) Sunday at the Ynares Arena in Pasig City.
Defending Philippine Cup champion Talk ‘N Text and Barangay Ginebra, despite its depleted roster, are tied for third with similar 6-3 cards, while Purefoods TJ Hotdogs and Sta. Lucia Realty sport similar 5-4 slates.
The Giants defeated the Realtors, 68-63, Saturday night in an out-of-town encounter presented by Phoenix Fuel at the Robert Barbers Memorial Sports Center in Surigao del Norte.
Kerby Raymundo led Purefoods with 15 points, while Paul Artadi and Roger Yap contributed 10 points each. Former MVP Kelly Williams had 16 points to lead SLR.
