Super Junior wins 3 Golden Disk Awards

Hot Korean boy band Super Junior bagged three plums at the 24th Golden Disk Awards including the grand prize, the Disk Daesang Award, for their album “Sorry, Sorry.”

The 13-member idol group also won the Disk Bonsang Award, which is equivalent to album of the year, and the Samsung YEPP Popularity Award.

The awarding ceremony was held Dec. 10 at the Seoul Olympic Hall in South Korea.

It was a night for artists under SM Entertainment (SME) agency as they won the major awards.

SME’s nine-member all-girl group SNSD, aka Girls Generation, won the Digital Daesang Award.

The Golden Disk Awards honors Korean singers based on album sales, popularity votes, and votes from a panel of judges.

In the Disk Bonsang Award, the winner was picked based on the following criteria: total album sales (60 percent); popularity votes (20 percent); and votes by judges (20 percent).

For the Digital Daesang Award, the criteria were: total MP3 downloads (60 percent); popularity votes (20 percent); and votes by judges (20 percent).

Besides Super Junior, other winners in the Disk Bonsang category are Lee SeungChul, 2PM, Drunken Tiger, and SG Wannabe.

In the Digital Daesang category, the winners are SNSD, Son Dambi, Baek Ji Young, Davichi, and Lee Seung Ki.

The Samsung YEPP Popularity Awards went to SHINee, which recently held a concert in the Philippines, and Super Junior.

The Samsung YEPP Newcomer Awards were given to 4Minute and T-ara and the Hip Hop Award went to Epik High.

Jang Gi Ha and the Faces won the Rock Award while Song Changsik won a merit award.

The Golden Disk Awards is South Korea’s version of the Grammys. It was established in 1986 and is given yearly by the Music Industry Association of Korea.
