Super Junior member files case vs SM Entertainment

Another member of the SM Entertainment family has filed a case in court in Seoul to dissolve his contract with the agency.
Hankyung (aka Hangeng), member of popular Korean boy band Super Junior, has filed the case through his lawyer at the Seoul Central District Court on Dec. 21.
The specific details of the complaint were not made available by the court or Hankyung’s lawyer. The Chinese and Korean media have been in frenzy since the news broke out.
Hankyung is the only Chinese member of Super Junior. He is also the leader of the boy band’s subgroup, Super Junior-M, which was launched for the Chinese market.
The case is another legal issue thrown at SM Entertainment.
Last July, three members of pop idol group TVXQ filed a similar case against SM Entertainment.
Kim Jaejoong, Xiah Junsu, and Micky Yoochun filed the case in a court to terminate their contract with SM Entertainment, saying that they were under a “slave contract” since they would be under the agency for 13 years. They also cited that they were at a disadvantage with regard to income distribution.
Hankyung’s filing of the case has sent shockwaves among Super Junior fans. Since the news broke out, fans have been posting hundreds of messages in fan fora and blogs trying to understand what prompted Hankyung to file the case.
They are also concerned about what will happen to Super Junior and Super Junior-M because of the case.
“Gosh, I can't believe this is happening. Hopefully Hankyung won’t leave,” one fan wrote on the Super Junior thread on Soompi.com.
Another fan wrote, “I really can't think straight now. The thought of something bad would happen makes me feel so scared.”
For its part, SM Entertainment said that it will talk to Hankyung to resolve the issue.
Hankyung was recruited by SM Entertainment in 2002 through an audition in China. He was launched as a member of Super Junior which debuted in Korea in 2005.
Being a popular Chinese artist, Hankyung was selected as one of the torch bearers in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
