The nine-member, all-girl idol group Girls Generation (also SNSD) has set their eyes on capturing the whole of Asia in 2010 via a concert tour beginning January that will likely include Tokyo, Japan; Bangkok, Thailand; and Shanghai, China, among other cities where K-pop is popular.

The decision to widen their horizons was buoyed by the success of their first majort concert held at the Olympic Park Fencing Stadium in Seoul, which was attended by over 6,000 screaming fans. Girls Generation were supported in that concert by fellow SM Entertainment artists SHINee’s Onew and Key, Super Junior’s Shindong and Eunhyuk and f(x) member Amber.

Year 2009 is clearly Girls Generation’s year with them winning numerous awards including major plums at the 24th Golden Disk Awards and first Melon Music Awards.

Just yesterday, Dec. 21, the group added yet another feather in their cap by clinching the Singer of the Year award from Korea’s National Assembly.

The awards are given yearly with winners selected through a survey by the National Assembly’s popular culture and media study society.

Besides Girls Generation, other awardees include Korean stars Lee Byung-hun and Kim Tae Hee, the film “Take Off” and the “Jewel in the Palace” musical.
