Drug test on foreign students urged
CEBU CITY — The Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) wants foreign students taking up language courses in the country to be subjected to random drug testing, especially with the recent arrest of Korean students in Cebu for marijuana use.
To date, over 12,000 thousand high-school students have undergone random drug testing. The concern of the DDB Vice chair is that there has been reports of foreign students enrolled in language centers caught using drugs.
DDB Undersecretary Paul Oaminal sent a letter requesting Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera to order the Bureau of Immigration and Deportation to conduct random drug testing among foreign students in the country.
“There is a need for Government to orient foreign students about our anti-drugs law and make them aware about the strictness of the law,” Oaminal told Manila Bulletin Tuesday.
Oaminal sees foreign students using illegal drugs in the country as “arrogantly believing” they are above the law and have no respect for the country’s justice system.
Underlined the DDB Undersecretary, “The move (random drug test) is not intended to prevent foreign students from having fun in our country but to remind them that they should respect our laws, specifically our laws on drugs.”
