Mati City opens P29-million sanitary landfill

DAVAO CITY — The City Government of Mati inaugurated on Tuesday, Dec. 28 its P29-million sanitary landfill with a wastewater treatment facility in Sitio Tagbobolo, Brgy. Sainz.

In a statement, Supervising Environmental Management Specialist Jovelyn P. Lugo said the new sanitary landfill "would only cater to residual wastes."

The city government added that "biodegradable wastes will be processed in the composting facility while recyclables will go to the central materials recovery facility."

It said the new sanitary landfill is "a Category 3 and can accommodate 200 tons daily."

"The sanitary landfill uses high-density polyethylene resin (HDPE) liner to prevent any leachate leakage that might contaminate the environment. Gas vents are also in place 50 meters apart to ensure that there will be no build-up of methane gas in the landfill," it said.

Meanwhile, the city government said the leachate from the landfill will be directed to the wastewater treatment facility "to ensure that only clean and safe water will be released back to the environment."

The sanitary landfill is the third in Davao Oriental province and the ninth in Davao Region. It has a target lifespan of eight years.
