DPWH expedites P88.4-M flood shield project in Nueva Ecija

Work on the P88.4-million flood control project is being rushed for completion in Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija in preparation for the rainy season, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DWPH) said.

DPWH Regional Office 3 Director Roseller Tolentino noted that the structure being constructed along Coronel River will provide better protection in the affected communities while shielding the farmlands from heavy flooding.
Supervised by the DPWH Nueva Ecija Second District Engineering Office (DEO) under District Engineer Elpidio Trinidad, the project involves the construction of an 846-lineal meter gabion-type flood control structure along Coronel River’s Barangay Bugnan section.
Currently, the project is now 86 percent complete with work starting in February.
“Completion of the whole project is slated in Oct. 2023 but may be moved on an earlier date if good weather permits and no delays affect the construction activities,’’ Tolentino stated.
When completed, Tolentino explained that the six-layered gabion wall, which is designed to be connected to the previously built protective structures in the area, is seen to improve crop production by shielding nearby farmlands from river water over flow and reducing land scouring of the river banks.
Aside from the P88.4 million flood shield project, Tolentino said that his office has constructed two flood control structures along the Pampanga River sections “ensuring the protection of communities in San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija against threat of inundation during heavy rains.’’
Tolentino identified Barangays Magpapalayok and Tambo Adorable as the two communities that will benefit from the protective structures built by the DPWH Nueva Ecija Second District Engineering Office (DEO).
“Completed in Barangay Magpapalayok is a 410-lineal-meter flood control mitigation structure that connects to existing floodwalls along the section of Pampanga River,’’ the DPWH disclosed.
Costing P63.05-million, Tolentino stated that the new floodwall serves as an additional layer of defense to safeguard both the lives and properties of Barangay Magpapalayok residents against river water overflow in times of torrential rains.
The DPWH Nueva Ecija Second DEO also completed a flood mitigation structure with two sections with a combined length of 826.8 lineal meters in Barangay Tambo Adorable.
The P96.5-million structure fortifies the riverbank of Pampanga River to minimize river swelling while also shielding nearby residential areas from flooding come rainy season.
“Locals of Barangays Magpapalayok and Tambo Adorable rely on agriculture as main source of livelihood making the provision of the flood control structures vital in ensuring that farmlands and fields dedicated to growing vegetables and other crops are free from water-related damage,’’ the DPWH added.
