Philippine endemic florals and fauna take centerstage at National Museum

Explore the natural beauty of the Philippines through ‘Natural Heritage in Focus: The Philippine Flora and Fauna’ art exhibit

Last Sunday, May 22, the world celebrated International Day for Biological Diversity, which promoted understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. Locally, the Philippines is known for its rich ecosystem, housing a variety of endemic species—both plants and animals—with many of them being critically endangered.

To shed light on that and also celebrate National Heritage Month, the National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) launches a new exhibit that puts the spotlight on Philippine endemic and native species of plants and animals.

Dubbed “Natural Heritage in Focus: The Philippine Flora and Fauna,” the art exhibition is a production of the collaboration of the National Museum with the Philippine Botanical Art Society (PhilBAS) and the Philippine Fauna Art Society (PhilFAS). According to the PhilBAS, “77 artists submitted a total of thirty-nine botanical artworks and fifty-nine fauna artworks. The jury selected only twenty-one flora artworks and twenty-one fauna artworks.”

“As we celebrate National Heritage Month this month of May... we at the National Museum would like to give special attention to our natural heritage,” NMP director-general Jeremy Barns said. “We are very happy that many artists devoted their time and effort for being one with us in this advocacy. We have looked at the works of art and we are happy to say that, at many levels, they check all the boxes. They are beautiful, fresh, energetic, sincere, and inspired.”
