The Department of Education (DepEd) on Sunday reaffirmed its commitment to ensure the safety and well-being of teachers, and to maintain schools as “zones of peace” following the recent attack to two elementary teachers in Valencia, Bukidnon.

DepEd said Education Undersecretary Annalyn Sevilla and Officer-in-Charge Assistant Secretary for Legal Affairs Alberto Escobarte have met with officials of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) on Sunday and apprised them of DepEd’s assistance to the victims.
“Sa ngayon nakapagbigay na po tayo nang financial assistance (We have already gave financial assistance to the victims). We were able to give it through voluntary contributions doon sa pamilya,” Sevilla said.
The victims, Escobarte assured, will be entitled to a “rehabilitation leave” with pay, on top of their statutory benefits from the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) and PhilHealth.
Education Secretary Leonor Briones earlier denounced the attack on teacher Zhydee Bitago Cabañelez in front of her students at Dalit Elementary School last October 15.
Four unidentified gunmen on motorcycles reportedly went inside the victim’s classroom and shot Zhaydee and her husband, Ramil—who is also a teacher in the same school. DepEd said Zhydee sustained multiple gunshot wounds while Ramil managed to escape.
“DepEd calls on the authorities to conduct an exhaustive investigation of the gruesome incident and expects results that will bring the perpetrators to justice,” the statement read.
“DepEd sternly enjoins the community, local officials, and law enforcement agencies to work closely in ensuring the safety of schools, learners, and teachers,” it added.
The education department said the Schools Division Office of Valencia City already coordinated with the local authorities for added security.
“The barangay leaders committed to assign civilian volunteer organizations (CVO), purok leaders, and barangay tanod to serve as security officers during school hours,” Escobarte said. “The community people have become more aware and are escorting the teachers in coming to school and going home up to the boundary of the barangay.”
DepEd said learners, teachers, and parents have already received stress debriefing following the incident. Classes in the school will also resume next week.
“We continue to reiterate our call to various stakeholders to maintain the neutrality of schools as ‘zones of peace’ to ensure that learners and teachers are in an environment conducive to learning and free from harm,” Briones underscored
