Be safe from fire this New Year, Iloilo City gov't urges residents

ILOILO CITY – The city government has reminded residents to be safe from fire this New Year after more than five fire incidents hit this city in less than a week.

“We are urging residents to follow fire safety tips,” said the Iloilo City Operations Center in an advisory.

Two fires hit this city on Wednesday, Dec. 28.

The first fire occurred in Barangay San Isidro in Jaro District which razed the house of a barangay secretary.

The second fire struck Barangay Veterans Village in City Proper District. A blaze also hit the area on Monday, Dec. 26, affecting more than 100 residents.

Two days earlier on Christmas Eve, a fire hit a coastal barangay in Molo District and displaced more than 100 residents.

As New Year’s Eve is three days away, the Iloilo City Operations Center has urged residents not to place firecrackers inside their house, near any flammable materials, or children.

It also told the people to be careful with any lighted candles or make sure that cooking stoves or burners are not near any flammable items.

The Iloilo City Social Welfare and Development Office has distributed emergency aid to fire victims, including food packs and hygiene kits.
