Although confident that their system will not be hacked, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Thursday assured that it has a back up plan in the event that hacking might happen during the May 10 elections.

Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez cited the multiple trusted originals of the election results that their system will generate as their best defense against hacking.

“The system itself has generated several originals. It does not only transmit to municipal level but transmitted to different servers,” he told reporters in an interview.

“If you hacked the municipal server and if you hacked the results at the municipal server reports, you are not hacking the reports of the KBP (Kapisanan ng mga Broadcaster sa Pilipinas). You are not hacking the report of Comelec central, PPCRV (Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting ), so if you have multiple trusted originals and you have one discrepancy, you know where to go to in case there’s a problem,” added Jimenez.

This is the purpose of redundancy, he said, it’s not just for recovery it’s also for audit.

Jimenez, however, admitted that there is no system which is hack-free, but expressed confidence that their system will not be hacked.
