There has only been one fatality in last Saturday's traditional "traslacion" of the Black Nazarene, a Manila Police official said Sunday.

Police Chief Inspector Erwin Margarejo, head of the Manila Police District (MPD) said that Bernardino Basilio, 40, the supposed second fatality reported by the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) during the said religious event, was still inside their house and was preparing to go to Quirino Grandstand when he succumbed to a heart attack before dawn Saturday.

"Based sa investigation namin, hindi siya nakadating sa pagdiriwang ng poong Nazareno kahapon. He suffered a heart failure when they were about to go to Quirino Grandstand at around 4:00 a.m.," he told Manila Bulletin in a telephone interview.

He added that it is impossible for Basilio to fell off the carriage of the Black Nazarene since the victim was inside the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center even before the translacion had started.

Due to this finding, Margarejo said this year's remembrance of traslacion can be considered by many as a successful one.

On Saturday, reports said two male devotees died and more than 400 people were injured during the more than 12-hour procession of the venerated image of Christ.

Aside from Basilio, a certain Rodrigo Omampo, 42, of Palanan, Makati City was likewise reported to have died while taking part of the procession due to a cardiac arrest.
