One dead, 600 families homeless in Baseco fire

(JANSEN ROMERO/ MANILA BULLETIN) Around 300 houses were engulfed in flames, leaving 600 families homeless with damage to properties estimated at P2 million. A 42-year-old man was killed while two people sustained minor injuries including a fire volunteer. Police identified the fatality as Gino Escobedo, jeepney driver, native of Bicol, and resident of the area.

According to a report, the fire started at the second floor of a two-story structure in the area at around 11:15 p.m.

It quickly escalated to fifth alarm after 12 minutes and reached Task Force Bravo at around 12:08 a.m.

Reports said firefighters had difficulty penetrating the narrow streets. Fire was declared under control around 1:46 a.m. Wednesday and was put out at around 2:48 a.m. Probers are now conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
