Vampire Weekend’s bite seems meaner than that of Ke$sha’s “Animal.”

The New York city-based indie rockers have proven itself to be voracious, moving into the top of the Billboard 200 album chart by selling more than a 120,000 copies of their second set “Contra.”

“Contra” is Vampire Weekend’s first effort to debut at number one. It dislodged last week’s chart topper “Animal” to number three, even as Susan Boyle hung on ever so tightly at the number two position.

In the singles chart, Ke$ha and her single “Tik Tok” still holds strong at the number one position for the fifth straight week.  The single likewise tops the Digital Songs chart this week with an impressive 244,000 downloads.

Lady Gaga remains a stone’s throw away from the top of the singles chart as she sits comfortably in the number two position for the sixth straight week with “Bad Romance.”

Former number one “Empire State Of Mind” by Jay-Z, featuring the glorious Alicia Keys, likewise holds on to its spot at number three.

Young Money featuring Lloyd and his single “Bedrock,” is up four notches to gain the number four seat in the singles top ten while Iyaz’s “Replay” moves down a step to number five and “Sexy Chick” (a.k.a. “Sexy Bitch”) by David Guetta featuring Akon is unmoving at number six.

Train makes a return to the top ten of Hot 100 after eight years, as “Hey, Soul Sister” rises from twenty-three to seven, making them the biggest gainer this week. The roots rock and roll band last reached the top ten charts with “Drops of Jupiter,” which peaked at number five in 2001.

Rihanna featuring Jeezy is up a step from number nine to eight with “Hard” while Owl City’s “Fireflies” stumbles down from number five to number nine and finally, Ludacris makes his 14th appearance on the top ten singles chart, tying with Jay-Z,  with “How Low.” The single moves in from fourteen to number ten to close this week’s top ten singles countdown.
