Single parenthood is what Wilma Doesnt does best

Model and TV host Wilma Doesnt and her firstborn may have won the mother-and-daughter celebrity square off on a TV dance program but it doesn’t mean that her children are already showbiz-bound.
“'Wag na muna. Kaya ko pa namang pag-aralin. Pag-aaralin ko muna,” she tells Manila Bulletin Entertainment Online on the set of “The Sweet Life,” Q Channel 11’s daily daytime magazine-talk show that she co-hosts with Lucy Torres.
“Even sa commercials, ayoko kasi makikita sila ng tatay nila,” adds Wilma, who has two daughters: Asiana, 7, and Svetlana, 2. “’Pag may college diploma na sila, they can do whatever they want.”
Wilma is a single mother who gets ample support from her parents and other family members in raising Asiana and Svetlana but she still has her own parenting style.
“I don’t think 'yong the way you were raised by your parents gano’n din dapat ang gagawin mo sa mga anak mo. Iba naman ang personality ko compared to my parents at iba naman din ang mga anak ko. The kids of this generation are really different,” she points out.
What Wilma does is spend as much time with her kids and make it a point to attend to all their needs, like in Asiana’s case, PTA meetings and other school-related activities.
She’s also a hands-on mom who cooks for them, gives them bath, rides the bike with them, and practically makes their simple wishes her command.
“Pero ‘pag may nagawa silang mali sa harap ko, I discipline them right away,” she shares. “In fairness, sabi nga ng mga friends ko bakit daw ang mga anak ko maayos pero 'yong nanay, hindi. Pero slight na luka-luka din sila. It’s in the blood.”
Being a single mom isn’t a laughing matter, though, that’s why Wilma turns serious when asked for advice to women in a similar situation.
“'Wag mong i-blame ang nangyari sa ‘yo sa mga anak mo dahil sa issue n’yo with their father,” she begins. “Never, never say bad things about their father. Rule ko ‘yan sa house even to my mother kasi ayokong lumaki ang mga anak ko na may anger or burden kasi ang tatay nila ganito, ganyan.
“And since wala silang naririnig na negative, it’s been proven and tested na 'yong dalawang anak ko when they wake up in the morning lagi silang naka-smile. When they ask if their father loves them, I say yes, of course! Positive lang parati
“Another tip, which I actually got from Lucy, is ‘pag papasok na ang mga bata for school or if you leave the house, you tell them, ‘God bless you.’ And the kids will say, ‘God bless you, too, Mommy.’ Para lagi silang protected.”
