Maynilad allots P16.B to address water leakage

Maynilad Water Services, Inc. has allotted P16.5 billion to continue its Non-Revenue Water (NRW) Management Program until 2027.
In a statement, Maynilad said over P10 billion will be spent to replace pipelines that have been causing leakage in the system.

“This pipe replacement project has a five-year period. Majority of the projects will be done in Manila, Quezon City, and Caloocan,” the statement read.
On the other hand, over P5.84 billion will be used for the company’s meter management projects, the establishment of smaller District Metered Areas (DMA), and leak repair activities.
The remaining budget allocation, it said, will be used for leak detection equipment and technical services.
Maynilad managed to lower its NRW from 68 percent in 2006 to 43 percent in 2022 which translates to a water volume recovery of 413 million liters per day (MLD).
“This was possible after replacing 3,083 kilometers of old and leaking pipelines and repairing almost 460,000 pipe leaks over a 16-year period,” it said.
The World Bank has earlier recommended that NRW should be less than 25 percent of the total water produced.
Around 80 percent of Maynilad’s water losses are due to leaks while the rest are losses due to inaccurate water metering and illegal connections which it classifies as commercial losses.
“We have dedicated more resources toward the reduction of losses so we can speed up water volume recovery in time for El Niño,’ Maynilad said.
“We hope that we continue to get the support of the relevant government agencies and local government units in facilitating the release of permits and other requirements needed for our NRW projects,” it added. (Nicole Magmanlac)
