CEBU CITY – Two persons were killed while six others were injured in a road accident in Barili town, Cebu province on Wednesday morning, July 26.
Police identified the fatalities as Irish Omagac, 14, and Lilibeth Devaras, 58.
The injured passengers were Nevelle Anaba Devaras, 66; Antonio Edson Natividad Enriquez, 26; Princess Dawn Sombreo Espina, 27; Kurt Josh Gevere Mangasi, 28; Kathlyn Genevere Mangasi, 28; and Kurtly Herera Mangasi, 30.
According to Police Staff Sgt. John Robert Sacan, traffic investigator of the Barili Police Station, the incident happened past 8 a.m. on the national highway in Barangay Guibuangan.
Police said a passenger van driven by Francis Pagatpat was running at high speed and tried to overtake another vehicle.
As the van tried to overtake, it hit the 14-year-old girl who was walking on the side of the road on the opposite lane.
After hitting the girl, Pagatpat completely lost control of the steering wheel that caused the van to ram into a tree.
Police said the girl, a resident of the barangay, died on the spot, while Omagac, a native of Valencia City, Bukidnon, was declared dead-on-arrival at the hospital.
The driver of the van was in critical condition, police said.
