Muslim NGOs request SM Malls for ‘Musallah’
Eighty-seven partner non-governmental organizations (NGOs) of the Muslim Inter-Organizational Meeting (MIOM) are requesting the management of SM Malls for a "Musallah" or prayer room for its thousands of patrons among the believers of Islam.
Leaders or representatives of the MIOM's partner NGOs convened Saturday at the Golden Mosque Compound in Quiapo, Manila, to further MIOM's advocacy relating to justice, equal treatment, participation in nation-building, as well as updates on Congress' response to Muslims' welfare.
Engineer Nassief Malawani, president of Greenhills Muslim Traders Association (GMTA), chaired the MIOM forum.
Malawani said Muslim traders and patrons at the Greenhills Shopping Center are very thankful to the Ortigas Clan for a big Musallah at the Greenhills commercial complex.
MIOM Secretariat head Ali Reza Kunting said the groups agreed to issue Resolution No. 81 requesting SM Malls' management to provide a Musallah for its Muslim patrons in its various supermalls in Metro Manila.
The MIOM resolution cited SM for being one of the country's leading exponents of corporate social responsibility (CSR).
It noted that the SM has launched many CSR initiatives, among them the care and assistance to customers of SM Malls who have special needs, like the physically-challenged, special children, elderly and nursing mothers among others.
Having a Musallah at SM Malls, the MIOM said in its resolution, would "promote national understanding and unity" since Christians already have chapels.
