Sonsona goes for WBO title
While Puerto Rican Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. did all the talking during their recent press conference, Filipino title challenger Marvin Sonsona vows to do his inside the ring.
In a battle of undefeated fighters, Vazquez and Sonsona will square off for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight crown in a 12-round encounter this Sunday at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
According to Filipino trainer Nonito Donaire, Sr., Sonsona got annoyed when Vazquez positioned his fist near the Filipino’s face in their photo ops before the end of their press conference last Wednesday.
“Marvin really got annoyed but he kept his cool all throughout the press conference. He later told me it only made him motivated to get his payback inside the ring,” Said Donaire in an overseas interview with the Bulletin.
The 19-year-old Sonsona (14-0-1, 12 KOs) is eyeing his second world crown after claiming the WBO super flyweight belt last year by defeating another Puerto Rican, Jose “Carita” Lopez.
In his first defense, Sonsona settled with a draw opposite Mexican Ivan Hernandez but the Filipino was already stripped of the crown for failing to make the weight.
Last Saturday both combatants easily made the weight limit with Sonsona coming in at 121.5 while Vazquez at an exact 122.
“Marvin feels comfortable in this weight because he still gets to eat even the night before the weigh-in. He has also gained some maturity probably as a result of his mistakes in the past,” said Donaire.
